Are GMOs really as bad as they’re painted out to be

Today, we live in a world where either something is organic or something it is full of chemicals. There’s no ‘in between’ when it comes to food or other similar products. We are living in times where we want everything fast and at the tip of our fingers. In these times something called as GMOs have become very popular.

But what are GMOs?

GMO stands for genetically modified organisms. It is literally an organism that has had its DNA altered or modified in some way through genetic engineering. In most cases GMOs have been altered with DNA from another organism like a bacterium plant, virus or animal. These organisms are sometimes called as transgenic organisms.

GMOs are considered to be harmful by many people. It is said that the items are modified and that they are good for your health. People are of the belief that genetically engineered foods are dangerous. There is an ongoing debate that these foods are dangerous and genetically modifying foods is unhealthy. But is it really so?

There have been cases where GMOs have proven to be helpful for the people. For instance; around twenty years ago, the farmers producing Hawaiian papayas were in trouble. Some insects were transferring a virus in the fruit known as the Ringspot virus. And this was vehemently destroying the crops. Scientists then came up with the idea that they could transfer a gene that was not harmful part of the virus, which was known as the coat protein, to the papaya’s DNA. This idea really worked the papayas were safe.

Some people are also of the opinion that eating organic foods in their purest form is also not safe. Also, apart from the papaya case, there have been many cases where GMOs have proven to be successful.

There is a really wrong image painted in the minds of people about GMOs. They are not as harmful as people claim it to be. We should always be open to trying different things and give GMOs a shot.
