Hoarding is possibly a word that we have always heard, “she is a make-up hoarder” or “he is a shoes hoarder”. These are some sentences that we often come across. We basically know what hoarder means. It basically means collecting something or preserving something for future use. But what is memory hoarding? This, in no way is a common phrase or something that we hear often. It is fairly new for us. So before knowing if one is a memory hoarder or not, let’s start by understanding what memory hoarder means.

Memory hoarding is basically a mental state of mind of collecting a lot of information or details about certain something and then over-analysing it. It is much like OCD, which is why it is also termed as memory hoarding OCD. It is a condition where one saves a lot of things in mind for safekeeping or just because of something that he/she is scared of and can recall when in need. It is like revisiting things and details in the mind.

This can end up being quite stressful and even cause anxiety to people. Memory hoarders tend to over think about thinks and also over-analyse about uncertain situations which can affect them negatively. It is not limited to just pleasant memories, memory hoarders generally divert more so towards nightmares and things that impacted them in a negative way. This is one of the reasons why they should seek professional help. 

There are a lot of symptoms that connect with memory hoarding, most common being, unable to let go of certain items because of the memories attached to it, feeling helpless, inability to pay attention to things, depression, etc. These things mostly happen if one faced something terrible in childhood, has a deprived life or even lived alone. It is not deadly if in control but can prove to be dangerous if not looked into it.
