How will the pandemic affect schools and kids in terms of social media usage?

Covid19, a name that has been not less than a nightmare for everyone. No one would’ve thought that a disease could keep the world indoors, could slow down time and could keep the busiest streets quiet. It has not only affected people’s physical health but also drained people out mentally, which in a way is more dangerous. It’s not just about the mental health of the adults but also about the children.

Don’t be surprised, the kids have suffered no less this quarantine. Their daily activities like going school, going to classes or just mere playing has all stopped. This brings them to their last resort, which is Social media. Social Media is something that everyone has been rigorously active on since the pandemic took over, especially kids. Since the schools are shut, most kids have their classes online. This gives the kids a freedom to explore the fascinating world of social media.

It isn’t possible for the parents to constantly check what their child is doing, which can be quite a disadvantage considering that they might be exposed to something that they shouldn’t be at this age. It affects their mental health as well as their physical health. Let’s be real for a second, social media can be addictive and most children these days are on all the possible social media, be it Facebook, Instagram or Whatsapp. This pandemic has made it easier for the children to reach out on social media more than ever as they practically are at home and even their classes are being conducted online.

Social Media is useful of course, but only if used correctly and at the right time. It can be a boon or a curse, depending on how people use it. The usage of social media has drastically gone up during this global pandemic and the number of children using social media is high as well. A big reason why social media industry is flourishing so much is because the rate of young ones is high. Let’s take a simple example, younger ones are on all the possible social media platforms, their parents are on some while their grandparents are on none. This clearly proves that the usage of social media is increasing as the age decreases.

Coming to the schools, of course the schools are shut but the education cannot be stopped. This is where the platforms like Google meets come in handy. Teachers who are used to teach in front of 60 students live are now forced to learn something new. This is the power of a global pandemic. It taught us something that we weren’t expecting learn at all. It not only taught us technical things, it taught us patience, it taught us the value of people, it taught us the value of environment and most importantly it taught us the value of work.

Pandemic might not be ideal in any way, but it was ideal in giving us a reality check. All we can hope and pray for now is that hopefully the power of social media brings the students in the right and bright light and now the other way around.
