Script Your Story

Have you ever practiced a winning speech? We are sure you have; everyone has! An award for a screenplay is something that a lot of people dream about. If you are interested in script writing then you must begin now, as it is not as easy as it seems. It takes a lot of practice and constant hard work, which is why starting as soon as possible will be a great idea. Let’s understand how you can go about it.

When you are writing a script, creating a basic plot of the story is the first step. It doesn’t have to very sharp or specific, just a summary. When we read a book, we often read the summary to understand whether we are interested in the book or not. Similarly, creating an outline on which the story is based is very important. Build your story around asking the question “what if”. For example, “what if the character gets superpowers?”

The next part is choosing the leads of the story. Understand how many characters will help the story move forward. Does the story need a villain or not, if so, how are they going to be like? Decide whether the script is going to be story-oriented or character-oriented. Make sure to create characters that are interesting and play a major role in the storyline. Characters help the story reach the audience, which is why giving them a vital part is extremely important. The characters can be simple or complex, but they need to have some arc.

Create a conflict in the storyline. The conflict could be big or small, but something that will help the story take a drastic turn. The conflict plays a very important role in scriptwriting because, without it, the story will be left incomplete. A conflict adds an interesting and exciting element that the audience craves for. The conflict can be something that the villain may cause, or just a turn of events that lead to a problem, it all depends on you and your creativity.

Next comes the dialogues, as they play a supremely important part in your script. It is said that a hit film needs some superhit dialogues, and we can assure you that it’s true. The dialogues don’t need to be over the top or dramatic, they should go with the theme of the story. The dialogues depend on how you have shaped the characters. If your character is a businessman then in a meeting they will talk in a formal tone. The dialogues must meet the requirements of the situation and the character.

The climax of the film/show is something that the people are most excited about. It is probably the most exciting part, which is why it is the scriptwriter’s job to make it as interesting and unique as possible. Again, the climax doesn’t always need to be over the top, it can be subtle and simple but should suit the situation and the conflict. The conflict that you set-up for the character must be solved by the end of the climax. But again, it differs on how you want the storyline to be. If you want the story to be left on a cliff-hanger, then go ahead and do so.

Note down all the ideas and thoughts that you have while you are writing. It immensely helps when writing a final draft. A lot of times you may get an idea in the most unexcepted situations, but writing it down quickly will help you in a long run. You never know when your “Eureka” moment occurs, which is why preparing for it beforehand is important. Also, when you are done with creating the storyline, make sure that you place the scenes according to how you want to showcase them on screen.

These were just some of the points that a scriptwriter must pay attention to. There are a lot of things that need to be studied in detail, but for beginners, these work just fine. Concentrate on delivering the best work possible and continue working hard towards your goal. These tips will come in handy, but in the end, the result speaks for itself.
