Using memes in advertising.

Advertisements play a huge role in our day-to-day lives. They promote goods and services for brands in such a way that people tend to get attracted to the product. Advertisements are not only meant for promotion but also to spread important messages. They are a great means for spreading information to a large number of people at the same time.

Over the years the language of advertising has changed drastically. Earlier advertisings used to be very rational in nature, which then changed to a more emotional appeal over the years. But now, advertisers have drifted towards a fairly new means of promoting products, that is, memes. Memes, today, are being extensively used as a form of advertising.

What are memes?

Memes in literal terms mean “an image, video or a piece of text, typically humorous in nature, which is copied and shared rapidly by internet users, sometimes with variations.”

Memes are the most trending things on the internet today. From jokes to news and other information, all of it is generated through memes today. Advertisers have been using memes in their ads to create an impression in the minds of their audience that they are up to date with the recent happenings and are well versed with the “meme culture.”

Memes are mostly used in digital marketing campaigns and many brands today are using them. This helps the brands target a larger number of young audiences. These ads are also eye-catchy and attract people instantly. Memes are short and deliver the message straight away. This is one more reason why advertisers have been using them extensively.

Why using memes is beneficial for advertisers?

  • Creates a good impression for the brand
  • Provide a sense of humor to any product
  • Show advertisers as active participants in the online culture
  • Makes the product memorable
  • Leads to increased consumer buying

Brands like Pepsi, Durex, McDonald’s and Burger King have been making use of memes as a part of their regular advertising campaigns. Pepsi recently used the meme “if you don’t love me at my” to promote their soft drink.

Memes are a great way to promote any product or service. Now advertisers have also been using memes in PSA’s. Lots of brands are hopping onto the meme bandwagon. A change is sure to be seen in the way advertisers use memes in the future.
