Which part of the online world was most affected by this pandemic

Pandemic and Chill

In the wake of the ‘Big-C’, when the entire world faced a complete lockdown, everything has gone online; be it MNCs, schools or cinemas, the online world has made everyone its prey. While the pandemic forced everyone to stay locked inside their houses, people found online platforms as an escape. The online world has proven to be the ‘Messiah’ in these trying times.

But, the one part that has seen a drastic surge are the OTT (over the top) platforms. With cinema halls being closed, film producers, distributers and even audiences had no choice but to make use of these platforms. Online portals like Netflix, Amazon prime, Disney+Hotstar and HBO have seen an evident rise subscribes during the pandemic.

While everything was shut, movies and series were still running. Thanks to these OTT platforms. These platforms have not only provided entertainment, but also let people explore the world of cinema from various countries at one single space.

The only means of entertainment in this pandemic were the OTT platforms. With multiple genres and various languages to choose from, everyone had something that they could watch. According to a survey conducted by FLYX, Netflix gained 10 Million subscribers during the course of the pandemic. Another survey states that 50% of the people subscribes to at least one OTT platform during the lockdown and 20% of people discovered something new to watch.

The beginning few months were great for the OTT world. But, with increasing number of users and the lockdown not seeming to end, these platforms have faced a lot of backlash. To keep up with the rat-race all of these platforms have been producing anything and everything that comes in their way. The quality of their content has deteriorated drastically. The shows like ‘Indian Matchmaking’ on Netflix were termed as a cringe-fest by the audience.

Also, as cinema halls and offices are expected to open up, the audience’s usage of OTT platforms is sure to see a downfall.

With the quality of content taking a backseat, will these OTT platforms be able to survive for long? Only time will tell!
