Wide-spread ragging cases in indian education

Ragging is a nefarious practice wherein senior students get a motive to torture their juniors and make them easy prey to satisfy their sadistic pleasures. Ragging has drastic effects, from terrible physical injuries to mental illnesses that disturb them forever or worse, discontinuing their college education before it even starts. Ragging is a vicious human rights violation that can be a horrible nightmare for any student.

Here’s a list of few widespread ragging cases in India:

  1. Pon Navarasu case – 1996
    Pon Navarasu, a first-year medical student of Muthaiah Medical College in Tamil Nadu was subjected to violent ragging by his senior. He was asked to lick the soles of a senior named John David’s slipper, and he denied doing it. John David then used his Karate skills and killed the young fresher and then used surgical tools to chop off the body. His dismembered body was found around several parts of the state. 
  2. Anup Kumar – 2002
    Anup Kumar was a 19-year-old engineering student from Kanpur who was subjected to sexual harassment in the name of ragging. Kumar was asked to do shameful acts and had to endure the beating of his seniors. As a result, he committed suicide.
  3. Aman Kachroo – 2009
    On March 7 2009 Aman Kachroo, a 1st-year student of Dr. Rajendra Prasad Medical College was brutally beaten up by the senior students of his college, to the extent that it resulted in a brain hemorrhage, and eventually, he passed away.
  4. Ajmal PM – 2012
    A 17-year-old aeronautical engineering student Ajmal was set on fire in the name of ragging. As soon as Ajmal went inside the common washroom he smelled thinner and soon enough, the room was set on fire. This cruelty was done by a group of 4 students who had failed and were in the same class. Ajmal suffered 60% burns and passed away a few days after the incident took place. 
  5. Krishna – 2015
    In 2015, an engineering student Krishna hanged himself after writing in his diary that Shekhar, from the same College, was continually beating him and looting his pocket money.

Ragging is an outrageous offense and as responsible citizens of the country, we need to report such incidents to the authorities.
