Hinglish- the marriage of Hindi and English!

“Don’t ‘Pakaofy’ me yaar!” How many times have you found yourself speaking to friends in this way? You’ve lost count, right? Speaking in this manner has become common and natural for us Indians. We casually slip in our local words while speaking to people in English. This phenomenon is known as “Hinglish.”

Because of our urge and obsession to speak in English, we Indians made our own version of it! Hinglish is the amalgamation of Hindi and English. It is an emerging language in our country that throws in English phrases into Hindi conversations. India is home to almost 125 million English speakers and most of them end up using Hindi with it too. Language is the form of expression and we Indians definitely know how to express ourselves!

Bollywood films have played a major role in ingraining this language in our minds. With film titles like ‘Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega’ and songs like ‘Tune Maari Entry aur Dil me Baji Ghanti’ coming in, people have fluently adapted to this language. We also see film actors using Hinglish extensively. Hinglish adds spice to films and songs along with increasing the relatability quotient. 

Apart from films, advertisements are also making use of Hinglish in their television ads and taglines. The infamous tagline “Yeh Dil Mange More” by Pepsi was a huge hit and stuck with people for a long time. Snickers also had a tagline called “Hungry Kya?” for one of their campaigns. Using Hinglish allows people to understand things better and creates a lasting impression on them as well. 

One of the major reasons why people use Hinglish is because they are not completely fluent in both, Hindi or English. Hence, they came to adopt a term that included both! Today Hinglish has been widely accepted across India and people consider it as a separate language itself.
