Holding celebrities accountable when they mess up

Celebrities are human beings and they are as prone to making mistakes as the general public. But their actions and words can often have great effects on people and society at large. There have been countless instances when celebrities have messed up and have been held accountable for their actions.

Some people argue that since a celebrity’s life is always under the scanner, they can be caught off guard by the media or someone, making them act and behave differently. It is offensive to film someone without their consent. But still, these instances remind people that at the end of the day celebrities are as human as a common person.

Child celebrities who grow up in the limelight can have issues handling fame at an early age but still, that does not the liberty to mess up poorly. For instance, videos had emerged of a 14-year-old Justin Bieber making use of the n-word. He had immediately apologized for it but then another video of him using the same word was again uploaded in the same week. Ariana Grande was seen licking a doughnut that she did not buy in a marketplace.

Ryan Lochte lied about getting robbed at gunpoint in Rio and was seen vandalizing public property and urinating in a video and bribing his way out of the situation. The Rio Olympics spokesperson said “Let’s give these kids a break” as he did not feel the 32-year-old kid should be held accountable for his actions. If celebrities are not criticized for their wrongdoings and are allowed to get away with it just because they are famous, it teaches the youth that equality is a seemingly distant dream and that as long as one has fame, they have the liberty to do anything.

Having one’s private life and words are scrutinized all the time is difficult. But celebrities must own up to and be called out for their mistakes and then should learn from them and move forward.
