Negative effects of advertising on people’s minds

The world is become a billboard. You will find advertisement is such unconventional and unimaginable places, not just traditional but also digital ads. The main aim of an advertisement is to produce the need for a product in people’s life.

The advertisement should make the viewer or target audience feel that their life will get simpler or better only if they have this product. The intention of the advertiser is to influence the consumer’s thoughts, minds and emotions while making the buying decision.

Here is how advertisements negatively impact people’s mind:

  •  It is manipulative: Advertising makes people think they are not good enough. Basically, advertisements need you to feel there is something wrong with you which can be made right with their product. They make you feel you are not beautiful, intelligent, confident, slim, fat, fair and so on which is emotionally manipulative.
  • It is misleading: Advertisers and marketers hype up the benefits of the products or exaggerate the need one has for the product. Sometimes, it affects the way you think, like without shopping there is no contentment.
  • Fuels desire: Even if you did not want or need the product in the first place, advertisements make you feel that you do. If you see a product everywhere, 10 times in a day, eventually you will desire to have it and will ultimately buy the product.
  • Advertisements can be deceptive: In order to persuade the customers, advertisements tend to be misleading, manipulative and deceptive. Sometimes, advertisers distort reality and create unrealistic expectations.
