Negative effects of the rise of social media in current time.

Lockdown has been quite a strange time for everyone. As much as we all have disliked the condition and the disease and the fact that people and their businesses have been hugely affected, we in a way have like to have that space and time to ourselves that wouldn’t have happened otherwise.

But this time one medium that took care of all our information as well as entertainment needs was social media. Social media has been used by a lot of people for a very long time, but this pandemic has seen it rise move than ever. Since people are constantly in their houses now, with no contact to outside world, social media has been an escape as well as a friend.

This friend might be very helpful but it doesn’t take much time for it to turn into a foe. Social media has just as many negative effects as it has positive. These days a lot of younger boys and girls mainly kids have been using social media. Since schools are shut, they have their lectures being conducted online which is why they are forced to use social media on a regular basis. This exposes them to things that are not children-friendly. A lot of things put up on social media is not appropriate for kids and them exposed to all this at a young age may affect their mental health.

Another thing that has been notices is cyber bulling. A lot of people have been victims of social media assaults. It is very easy for people to come on social media and humiliate people and the cases like these have been increasing a lot during lockdown. For example, there came a case called “Bois Locker Room” where a lot of young boys were passing inappropriate comments on Instagram. This is just an example, but a lot people have been going through this.

Also, pressure of looking a certain way has also been encouraged on social media. A lot of people see people looking perfect with unrealistic beauty standards and want to be like them. Or when they see stories of people travelling, they often compare themselves and suffer an inferiority complex. Social media encourages all this which is a big disadvantage.

Every coin has two sides, it can either be good or bad, it is on each one’s perception. Social media does have some negative effects but it has its set of positive too. It is on us how we perceive it.
