The various ways social media has affected human behavior.

Social media and its impact on human behavior

Social media is a plethora of websites, applications and other platforms that lets us create or share content and also helps us to participate in social networking where people can interact with one another.

Social media has evolved from being a convenient means for keeping in touch with friends and family to being used in ways that it has become an integral part of life. Social media ruminates around human interaction and interaction with ideas, becoming more powerful by the day and inevitably it is playing a pivotal role in affecting human behavior as it grows. Information now is just one touch away.

Social media lets opinions be shared amid the vast population of consumers and therefore holds the power of shaping them. It allows democracy and equality to play their part by enabling everyone to send out their content to the society without discrimination. This can affect those who are otherwise afraid of voicing their thoughts, in a positive manner. It can urge people to gain awareness of, side with and fight for what they perceive to be correct thereby bringing about positive changes around. Social media also facilitates collaborative behaviour among us; people from all over the world are often seen uniting the canopy of the same issue, for instance, Black Lives Matter.

Social media also raises curiosity among us. We are swayed by information on every sphere, all around us and the more we see the more our thirst for knowing increases. This automatically improves our knowledge and awareness about issues and facts from around the world.

However, the negative aspects of social media cannot be kept hidden. Researches have shown that Facebook adds to 1.5% of the total office productivity across the globe which has adversely affected their productivity at work.

The fact that it is quite simple to maintain a level of privacy and anonymity on social media also gives rise to cyber bullying. One of the most noticeable negative effects of social media is that of addiction. According to a survey, internet users are now spending an average of 2 hours and 22 minutes per day on social media platforms.
