Web Series That Has Been Tasting The Harsh Reality

With the uprise in the OTT platform, which features some web series with bold contents that might affect the viewer’s life and emotions. This may surround the shows with numerous controversies. Many times, due to controversies surrounding it, a show becomes immediately famous or garners interest from individuals. At least, in the case of these web series, that is what happened. It is often the subject of the film, the vocabulary, or how it presents a certain religion that draws criticism. Here are few web series that have faced controversy:

  1. 13 Reasons Why Season 1- This series is about Hannah Baker, who commits suicide because of depression and bullying. She leaves cassette tapes behind which clarifies the 13 reasons why she committed suicide. Each tape was made in such a way that shows how each character was accountable for her suicide. Each episode focuses on each tape in the collection. While psychologists and parents criticized that it might be a contagion effect, may be caused by a single scene depicting how Hannah did it, which was removed many years later. They also incorporated a helpline number for kids facing the same issues, which was shown in every episode.

Hasmukh- Among others, Hasmukh is a dark web comedy series starring Vir Das, Ranvir Shorey, Ravi Kishan, and Amrita Bagchi that revolves around a shy small-town comedian who also happens to be a serial killer. As several attorneys took offense at the way they were depicted in the show and accused the show of ridiculing their name and credibility, Vir Das’ web series got into a serious legal problem. A lawsuit was lodged, criticizing the show for referencing lawyers as robbers, scoundrels, goons, and criminals, trying to stop Netflix from airing the web series. The Delhi High Court, however, declined to grant a temporary stay on the show and demanded to respond to the allegations from Netflix and the producers.
  3. Queen- Queen is a web series largely based on the life of Jayalalithaa, the late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, and features Ramya Krishnan in the lead role. According to reports, the niece and nephew of Jayalalithaa filed a lawsuit against the web series and the producers, claiming that if her personal life is shown without the consent of the family, the show could ruin Jayalalithaa’s image.

Due to their controversies, those web series became popular. The web series is, however, are a trend in the entertainment business. Since the plot is fascinating and funny, people still watch controversial shows.
