Using humor as a way to cope with dark feelings

“Seh lenge thoda” is a way of life now and all those who use humor to deal with dark situations in their life will relate to this. People deflect pain with dark humor. It is said to be a coping mechanism for people who have faced tragedy or are depressed.

People believe a sick (dark) sense of humor will get them through tough times. The tendency to crack jokes on pain, trauma, depression or death is how people hide the reality and the immense pain they are in.

Self-deprecating humor is another way of dealing with dark feelings, people hide their insecurities by making jokes about themselves or their failures, shortcomings and losses before others do it. According to a study, people who have a dark sense of humor or appreciate it are said to be more intelligent, more emotionally stable, and less aggressive overall and they take pride in this.

Dark humor, satire, sarcasm let people throw up their negative thoughts and channel their dark side which is way much better than piling up all this inside and suffering silently. As Ron Weasley once said, “One person can’t feel all that at once, they’d explode.”

Being dark and twisty is completely alright till it is harmless, for you as well as for people around. Not everyone can understand it, so it is important who you share your dark humor with. People might perceive it in a different way than you would and label you offensive, disturbing, and insensitive.

It is an excellent way of coping. It also helps people with the same thoughts take things on a lighter note as they know they are not the ones feeling like this. Humor keeps people falling off the deeper end and does not let the dark thoughts consume them. People connect with humor, find it relateable and it is therapeutic as well as incredibly powerful!

Wear your hilariousness as a badge of honor!
