Action Reveals Character – Iron Man teaches us Business Ethics

He’s a genius billionaire playboy philanthropist. He’s got oodles of swag, a swoon worthy smirk and a cult following since the release of the first movie in 2008. He gets his power from earned egotism, unchecked capitalism, and entrepreneurial genius.

Who’s he? None other than Tony Stark – our beloved Iron Man.
The superhero has become a cultural identity, with banners of the marvel character splashed across the entire world’s billboard, the cartoon versions stuck on small children’s bag and every teen proudly flaunting a Marvel tee or two. But, that’s not all. Iron man teaches us business ethics as well. Wondering how? Read on!

  1. You can do what people expect you to do, or you can do what’s right.
The Tony Stark we know before he was hit by life threatening shrapnel wound, was a playboy of the first order. But, when he returns, he changes all of that for good, choosing to shut down the weapon manufacturing division of the Stark industries, and toning down the drinking and gambling. People expect him to go back to his own ways, but he chooses to go the right way. As he tells Pepper, “I shouldn’t be alive … unless it was for a reason. I’m not crazy, Pepper. I just finally know what I have to do. And I know in my heart that it’s right.”
  2. Bravery and courage will take you places.
Jarvis: Sir, it appears his suit can fly.
Iron Man: Duly noted. Take me to maximum altitude.
Jarvis: With only 19% power, the odds of reaching that altitude…
Iron Man: I know the math! Do it!
Ironman literally flies to the stratosphere even though his suit ices over and he comes crashing back to the earth. But, undeterred he still continues on, flying to another universe to dispose of a nuclear missile. Its the same in the today’s world. Trust your intuition and gut feeling, take fresh heart and move forward bravely!
  3. Alcohol and professionalism don’t mix
Tony Stark often throws wild parties, which culminate in excess drinking and firing of repulsor blasts. For a superman on whose head lies a load of responsibilities, a leader of the Stark Enterprises, it’s the height of foolhardy to be indulging in life threatening activities.
  4. Don’t insolate yourself with your work environment
Ironman prefers to work in his own company. While this has led to several great accomplishments, the demerits have been far greater. He doesn’t realize that terrorists are using his weapons — until those terrorists capture him. He’s unaware that his partner Obadiah Stane is stabbing him in the back until Stane tells him directly. Mingle with your co-workers and stay tuned to the conversations. It helps you stay abreast of the latest gossip doing the rounds.
  5. Appreciate the people in your life.
In the beginning of the movie, we’re shown that though Pepper has been Stark’s personal assistant and confidant since many a years, he doesn’t deign to even remember her birthday. Gradually though, this changes.
