Body Positivity And How Plus-Size Models Promote It.

Do you see a model and go, “Wow! I wish I could be like her!”? We all look up to models and their aura is magnificent. A model’s beauty and charm are something different. We are always in awe of them and aspire to be like them in real life too. But when was the last time you saw a model that had “flaws” or in simple words, looked just like you? Models are always presented as stick-thin, with a chiseled jawline, and a perfectly measured thigh gap. Some years ago, this modeling culture faced a lot of flak for promoting “hypothetical beauty standards.” This is when the body positivity movement started to gain momentum. People started to promote “real beauty” and the acceptance of one’s flaws was what they preached.

What is body positivity?

Body positivity refers to having a positive perception of one’s body and accepting it as it is. It stands for breaking the society’s perception about a particular body shape, size, height, or appearance.

Through the body positivity movement, a lot of plus-size models came into the picture. Usually being plus-size or “fat” is considered taboo by society. People feel that having a voluptuous figure is “unhealthy.” The plus-size models also face a lot of trolling disguised as health concerns, but they are here to break stereotypes.

Here are some plus size models that are spreading body-positivity:

ASHLEY GRAHAM:

Ashley Graham broke stereotypes in many ways. She was the first plus-size model to feature on the cover of a sports magazine. She, in some way, started the body positivity movement. Since then she has modeled for many magazines and has walked the ramp for many designers too. Today, she is one of the biggest names in the modeling world and believes everyone is beautiful in their own way.

TESS HOLIDAY:

This proud Mama is an out-and-out promoter of body positivity. She is an American model internationally known for representing big girls on the runway. Apart from being a model, she also promotes “fat-positivity.” She strives to educate people that fat bodies are not always unhealthy. She engages with her audiences through her Instagram handle and talks about her struggles as well.

COCO MARIE:

She is an Instagram influencer and a model who doesn’t believe in “covering” herself up just because she has some extra mass on her body. She believes that stretch marks, cellulite, and thick thighs are normal, and shouldn’t be looked down upon. She styles herself in a sexy way and puts forth an example for all the young girls struggling with body-image issues.
