Endearment and respect- What these Korean terms depict.

Korean culture has suddenly taken over our lives thanks to all those TV shows and movies. Korean culture has become popular not only in India but all over the world. From BTS to Blackpink, we love Koreans and their culture. A lot of influencers today are also dressing up like Koreans. Their fashion has taken over the world. Be it graphic T-shirts, turtle necks, or quirky hairstyles. We have tried it all.

If you are an avid fan you might have even picked up a few words or phrases. But to keep things simple, here are a few Korean terms of endearment and respect that every fan should know.

Aein- Sweetheart or lover

This term is great for starters. A simple and sweet term, this word is gender-neutral and can be used for both, men as well as women. This is a pretty word to call your loved one too. Here’s how you can use it in a sentence: Aein isseoyo?” (“Do you have a sweetheart?”) 

Oppa- Older man

Oppa is a term that Korean women use for men who are typically elder to them. It is mainly used for elder brothers, but this word has a romantic undertone. Women use it for their boyfriends and husbands too. 

Yeobo- Honey or darling (used for married couples)

This sweet little term is used by married couples in Korea. This term is strictly limited to couples who are married. They lovingly call their spouse Yeobo. Here’s how you can use it in a sentence: Yeobo, gwenchana?” (“Are you okay, honey?”) 

Naekkeo- Mine

This term is popularly used in songs or albums in Korea. This translates to “mine” and is a term used for lovingly calling the person close to you. 

Jagi- Honey or darling

This is a gender-neutral nickname used for addressing your loved one. Unlike Yeobo, this term is used by couples in love.
