Great marketing ideas that were poorly executed.

Marketing is an integral part of any brand to promote its products and services. Marketing is a way for brands to know the needs and wants of their consumers. It promotes both, the brand and its products. Marketing strategies are carried out by brands across several platforms according to their target audience.

When brands execute marketing strategies, they have to keep in mind a lot of things. Things like the audience’s interest, what media platforms to choose, customer sentiments etc. all have to be taken into consideration.

One slight mistake and the whole campaign can go haywire. Some brands in the past have had brilliant marketing ideas but they failed miserably due to the ignorance of these brands.

Here are some of the great ideas that were poorly executed:

McDonald’s:

McDonald’s led out a campaign that showed a little boy talking to his mother, grieving about his dead father. The ad showed the mother saying that the only thing they had in common was the Filet-O-fish. This campaign received a lot of backlash for using a grieving moment to sell their product.

Dove:

Dove has always been known as a brand that promoted body positivity and oneness. But one of their campaign related to body positivity failed miserably. Dove came out with weird shaped cream bottles sending out a message of body positivity. But the bottles were shapeless and came only in 7 sizes that restricted the choices of women. This campaign faced a lot of heat on social media. It was a great idea, but if it was executed better it could have gone places.

Burger King:

Burger king’s campaign was innovative and new, but it backfired because of technical glitches. They set out a campaign wherein people could scan the wrapper of the burgers and that would lead them to a Wikipedia page that had all the information about the ingredients used for the same. In no time hackers hacked the Wikipedia page.  They then included ingredients like cyanide that created a scare among people.

Audi:

Audi let out a campaign called “an important decision must be made carefully.” The ad showed a mother-in-law walking down the aisle to check her daughter-in-law. She was shown pinching the latter’s lips, pulling her cheeks and looking at her teeth and tongue before giving her approval. This campaign faced a lot of hate as it was said to be objectifying women.

This shows how even brilliant ideas can backfire and how it is very important for brands to look at each and every detail before publishing an ad. You never know how the sentiments of people can be hurt.
