Is an actor being type-cast a good or bad thing?

Movies is a way of escaping reality which is why most of use love watching movies. It gives us a different perspective about certain things and also influences and inspires up in a lot of ways. The movies are made with a point of view of impressing the audience which is why movies on pretty much every subject is made. Everyone has different choices and things that they do like and things that they don’t. Some might like comedy, come might like horror and some may like romantic. It totally depends on a person’s choice. This is one of the reasons why even the actors/actresses take up various roles and challenges.

A lot of actors fear being type casted. They try and channel themselves with various roles just to avoid being type cast. So, is it bad being type casted? Let’s go back to the very beginning. If you look earlier onto the older films you will notice that a lot of actors were doing similar things without being experimental. The reason is that they were offered just those roles. If they were launched as say a villain, they would only be doing that for the next many films. Let’s take an example of Ashutosh Rana. He is s fabulous actor, but he will always be recognised as a great villain. This is what being type casted is.

Sometimes what happens is because we, as audience have seen a certain actor play a romantic role so many times, we start thinking of them a certain way. Because of this, the actors have a fear that the audience might not like them in any other role. The perception is now changing, where the audiences is getting the difference between what is real and what is reel but the lines then were much more blurred.

Being type casted may lead to create a creative loophole in the actor’s head which may lead to frustration. If they play a role to perfection, they are offered only that which make them in a way creatively handicapped which is something nobody wants. Let me give you an example. Zeeshan Ayyub, a wonderful actor but always has played the actor’s best friend, be it in Raees or in Raanjhaana. This is what an actor wants to escape from.

In movies, you have a chance to experiment and to show your true potential. Taking up variety of characters and the complexities of it excites the actors and one wouldn’t want to be categorised into a box. Of course, there are actors that have created a niche for themselves and like to stick to those but the satisfaction you get after playing a different human on-screen is priceless and also what a lot of actors crave for.
