Is social media beneficial or destructive during this pandemic

No one would have thought 2020 would give nightmares to everyone and put the whole world on lockdown. The only world that is not affected much by this pandemic is the virtual world. If we try to analyze social media’s role during this pandemic, it makes an interesting discussion.

  • Seeking health-related information: Apart from taking all precautions, it is a brilliant move to find ways to boost one’s immunity. Eating healthy food is a must in this. You can also find certain medicines that help with immunity. Many doctors and fitness experts are sharing tips through their social media handles.
  • Helping the needy: Social media is a boon or bane, that’s hard to debate, but one cannot deny online charity that has taken place during this pandemic. Whether it’s Baba Ka Dhaba or Indian actor Sonu Sood sending migrant workers to their homes, social media has made this possible. Not to mention, many needy people have received help only because of viral videos.
  • Misinformation is dangerous than virus: Although social media can bring those who are miles away from us closer, it can be a weapon of mass misinformation. You may have come across unscientific claims that the coronavirus will die in specific hours or can’t survive in summer vacation. These false informations have only spread false hope or panic among the masses.
  • Fear-mongering: Not everyone can verify if the forwarded message is true or false. Many Whatsapp messages often trigger panic within people. End of the world, no vaccine, or high death tolls, these messages have done enough damage. Many heart patients have died due to heart attacks. The best way is to face this crisis with courage and not panicking.

The above points are meant to guide you with the positive and negative impact of social media during this pandemic. We have to make sure that we only consume verified information and avoid fake news. To conclude, social media is like a knife; if it is in a surgeon’s hand, it will take a life. But if it is in the hand of a criminal, it can take life. We should choose what is best for us and others. Always look on the bright side of life!
