Marketing to senior citizens.

Do you and your grandparents agree on all things possible? Probably not! This is mostly because both of you come from two different generations and your thought processes also differ. While our grandparents are fairly traditional and prefer classic things, you on the other hand are well-versed with technology and are aware of the latest trends.

Now, because senior citizens come from a different generation altogether, marketers and advertisers have to adapt to different strategies while advertising to them. Marketing to senior citizens can be tricky at times as the use of modern technology reduces when it comes to them. Not generalizing all of them, but most of the senior citizens prefer traditional forms of media. They have a different approach to things. So, marketers have to make use of different strategies while targeting them.

Here’s how one can market to senior citizens:

USE SIMPLE AND RELATABLE LANGUAGE:

Senior citizens prefer something that simple and easy. Use of language that is not very over the top and filled with jargon will surely appeal to them. Because their age is a hindrance for them, easy language is perfect for them to understand. Marketers also have to make sure they don’t use “millennial” terms and abbreviations. They might be difficult for them to understand.

KEEP DIFFERENT MEDIA CHANNELS IN MIND:

Media channels for senior citizens ought to differ. Because they come from a different era, the media channels they are well-versed with will be highly different. Marketers should make use of traditional forms of media channels like Television, Radio, and Newspapers. Their usage among senior citizens is high and marketers will be benefitted from them. Newer channels like social media will not work.

GIVE THEM RELATABLE CONTENT:

For senior citizens, giving them something that they can easily understand is very important. Marketers have to keep this in mind. For them, relatable content will include radio shows or traditional newspaper articles with which they can make a connection. Hence, giving them content that they understand is very necessary.

PERSONALIZE THEIR EXPERIENCE:

Senior citizens love when something is specially personalized for them. Marketers have to keep this point in mind. One-on-one or personal communication is the key. Direct marketing strategies will work best in this case. Customization is another thing that should be taken into consideration while marketing to senior citizens.
