Things to negate while advertising for “cheaper” products

Advertising is the most widely used form of promotion. Brands and companies make extensive use of advertising for the promotion of their products. Different products require different forms of advertising and brands have to make sure they target the audience correctly.

Every product has a personality attached to it. While advertising for a product, it is essential to keep certain things in mind. A product represents the entire brand and sales depend on it as well. Products are bifurcated on many levels, from their packaging to their usage. But one specific bifurcation of the product is done on its price. While advertising a product, its price has to be kept in mind. For instance, you won’t have the same type of advertising for a luxury car and soap because a car is expensive and the soap is an FMCG product that is cheaper. There are always different rules while advertising for cheaper products.

Because of them being cheap, these products cater to a larger audience and sell like hotcakes. Advertisers have to adapt to different forms of advertising while dealing with such products.

Here are some things a brand should certainly negate while advertising a “cheaper” product:

AVOID GOING OVER THE TOP:

Because the product is cheap, the audience will also be someone who prefers something simple. Going overboard with advertisements will create a wrong impression about the product and will hamper sales. If you are advertising a pen, you cannot have multiple people promoting it and you do not necessarily need a jingle and a tagline.

DO NOT GO FOR BIG STARS:

Cheaper products are usually advertised by common-looking people as it resonates with the audience. Casting bigger stars might create a wrong impression about the product and will make it look expensive. For instance, an advertisement for refined oil need not have a big star. Someone like a homemaker will do the trick.

AVOID WRONG PERCEPTIONS SURROUNDING THE PRODUCT:

Cheaper products usually don’t sit well with people, because they are sold at a lower price, people feel that the product might have some defect. Advertisers need to make sure that the benfits of the product are delivered to the audience correctly. The appeal should be emotional and the features of the product should be highlighted.
