Is targeted marketing always a good idea?

Today, marketing plays a major role in promotion of any goods and services. Marketing is a way in which brands promote the buying and selling of their goods and services through different channels. Marketing includes advertising, promoting, selling and delivering goods and services to people. Today a new form of marketing called digital marketing is being used by brands.

What is targeted marketing?

Target marketing is a form of marketing that is aimed towards a specific set of audience that the brand resonates to. These people are called target audience. What target marketing does is that it advertises goods and services only to a specific set of people. It breaks a huge market into smaller sections and makes promotion limited. Only these people will relate to the ads. For instance, if you want to advertise a ‘notebook’ your target audience will mainly comprise of students and all your marketing activities will be directed towards them.

Benefits of Target Marketing

  • It resonated directly to the people that are concerned with the goods and services.
  • Helps in converting potential leads into customers.
  • It differentiates the brand from competitors with similar attributes.
  • Helps in building high customer loyalty.
  • Helps the brand stay focused towards a certain set of people.
  • Classifies products and services into categories.

Bu target marketing is not always beneficial as it limits the number of audiences the brand can capture.  It also limits the media channels that brands can promote on. For instance, if you want to target a product to teenagers, you will not promote it on television, instead you will do it on social media. But the viewership on television is definitely higher. So, carrying out target marketing all the time is not feasible.

All in all, target marketing is not all that bad, but it requires a certain amount of planning and strategy.
